John Donovan
Business Director and Principal Structural Engineer

John is Company Director responsible for all structural projects. He is in charge of the structural and civil design of a wide variety of residential developments.

His interest in civil and structural engineering was motivated by the diversity of attractive career options including buildings, roads, and water and soil engineering.

After graduating with Bachelor of Engineering from the University of New South Wales in 1968, John worked at the NSW Department of Public Works in cadetship roles in the Water Supply Design Branch and Manly Vale Hydraulics Laboratory.

Following a stint of structural design and supervision of buildings with a North Sydney Architectural company, John then travelled to the UK and Ireland and worked on various offshore oil and gas projects for the North Sea and the Irish Sea.

In 1984, he began working at Donovan Associates within the engineering division where he could translate his international skills, knowledge and experience to the various disciplines and practices within the company.

As the company director, John is focused on providing a comprehensive level of services to clients in Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong including inspection and reporting on the structural adequacy of existing buildings, and structural design and inspection of all types of low-rise residential structures and buildings.

Scott Sharma
Civil Manager

From an early age, Scott marvelled at impressive structures like the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and other monuments around the world. He would often wonder how something so vast and beautiful has stood the test of time.

That boyhood fascination eventually grew into something more serious and life changing for him. In 2006, he enrolled in Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Environmental Engineering double degree at the University of Newcastle.

Upon his graduation in 2012, he obtained experience working with two reputable engineering firms to further excel his engineering and environmental sustainability capabilities before joining Donovan Associates in 2013 as a Civil Design Engineer.

Over the next four years, Scott’s superior problem-solving skills saw him being part of every project proving to be a tremendous asset for the company and his colleagues. In time, he advanced to the position of Civil Manager and currently is leading the division with the emphasis on mentoring skills and a result-driven approach.

His other boyhood love included cricket. He had the opportunity to travel and play overseas between the ages of 18 through to 22 years. His other sporting achievements include Newcastle U16 – U19 representative (captain); NSW U21 representative; Big Brother Scholarship for Cricket Sussex County in the UK.

Scott combines his love for engineering and a sporting prowess with superior leadership skills to give Donovan Associates a real edge in the marketplace.

Malcolm Cork
Senior Registered Surveyor

Malcolm's interest in Surveying was first sparked by the job description. As with most Surveying jobs, every day is different, with new projects, locations, and challenges.

‘I like the variety a career in Surveying offers. Not only the mix of work indoors and outdoors at varying locations but also the diversity of the Surveying and Spatial disciplines, the ability to get involved in different types of projects with varied complexities is motivating and means you are continually analysing, problem solving and learning.’

The above led Malcolm to his decision to study a Bachelor in Surveying at UNSW, a choice he’s never regretted.

Malcolm started working as a field assistant during his time at university, which solidified his career choice and put him in good stead to receive post-graduate employment.
Following completion of his degree in 1992, Malcolm worked with private survey companies in Southern Sydney and Dubbo before joining Donovan Associates in 1995 and becoming a registered Surveyor in 2001

Malcolm is and has been involved in our projects around greater Sydney for the past 20 years he manages subdivision and strata subdivision work for Government departments, project builders, small developers and those undertaking their first Duplex subdivision.

Malcolm also manages the field parties to ensure prompt and professional service for our clients.

Neil Taylor
Survey Draftsman

Great engineers are known for being thorough and conscientious, and this unique blend of personality traits earned Neil the ‘Institution Prize’ from the NSW Institute of Surveyors before his completion of the Associate Diploma of Surveying in 2006. He always knew he had an engineering streak and now it was official.

Of course, that was expected since Neil had already completed his Associate Degree in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) in 1996. After completing his other engineering degree, a decade later, he decided to pursue surveying as his life’s destiny due to the technical aspect, flexibility, and heavy reliance on maths (Neil excelled in maths and physics at school), and he hasn’t looked back.

Over the years, Neil has worked as a surveyor throughout Australia and New Zealand, completing projects for both public and private clients in diverse industries including Sydney Trains and Australian Government Department of Defence. He has gained valuable knowledge in various facets especially survey drafting.

He joined the team at Donovan Associates in 2013, where he manages the drafting group, with responsibilities including staff liaison, and field and administrative work.

Neil’s strong engineering and advanced mathematics acumen make him an invaluable team member at Donovan Associates.

Ross McIntyre
Survey Manager, All-Rounder

During his high-school years, Ross excelled in technical and perspective drawing demonstrating a high level of accuracy and superb attention to detail and presentation.

It was a rare skill, acknowledged by the school’s careers advisor who pointed Ross in the right direction - a survey draftsperson work experience. The unique blend of office and fieldwork sparked Ross’ passion for engineering, and a dream was born.

He continued to pursue the dream with the local TAFE where he completed the Associate Diploma in Survey Drafting in 1994. Soon he worked as draftsperson drawing Landcom Subdivisions, Solicitor Indents and Topographical Surveys.

In 1996, Ross joined Donovan Associates as a full-time Field Assistant, since there were no vacant drafting positions at that time. Then in 1997, he advanced to the pre-field calculations role becoming highly proficient with the in-house written surveying software and providing ongoing and invaluable support to the IT department.

Of course, drafting was his passion, and soon he got back into drafting. However, as the company reached new heights, it became necessary for Ross to offer again support for the IT department, which he did from 2005 to 2012 rendering survey management, and administration and drafting support.

Ross is the go-to-expert for anything engineering software related, and he is highly respected in the company and the industry. He also sits on the social committee and serves as company Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) representative.
